Bella per forza: donne, bellezza e potere nell’Italia del Rinascimento

Speakers | Jill Burke (Professor of Renaissance Visual and Material Cultures at the University of Edinburgh and THP Senior Fellow) and Valentina Altopiedi (Università degli Studi di Torino)

During the Renaissance, the proliferation of images of beautiful women—from Botticelli’s Venuses to Titian’s idealized portraits—was not without consequences for real-flesh-and-blood women. This lecture explores the world of Renaissance beauty practices: from court recipes to remedies of poorer women, from harmless cosmetics to hidden poisons. We will thus discover the daily concerns of women and their extraordinary response to the pressures of an era obsessed with appearance.

The THP Conference will take place at Villa della Regina (strada Comunale Santa Margherita, 79 – Torino)
